FLAME RETARDANT, FLAME RETARDANT COMPOSITION, AND INSULATED WIRE

Disclosed is a flame retardant that can enhance cold resistance and productivity of a flame retardant composition.  Also disclosed are a flame retardant composition using the flame retardant and an insulated wire. A flame retardant (10) is obtained by treating the surface of an aggregate (12) of particles (12a) composed mainly of magnesium hydroxide obtained by using magnesium chloride in seawater as a raw material with an organic polymer-containing surface treating agent (14).  The organic polymer contained in the surface treating agent (14) is preferably an olefinic resin such as polyethylene or polypropylene.  Preferably, the organic polymer has a low viscosity and a low melting point.  For example, the organic polymer is preferably a resin that has a melt viscosity of not more than 1000 mPa·s at 140°C or has a melting point of 100°C or below.  The flame retardant composition comprises the flame retardant (10) and a matrix polymer.  The insulated wire is prepared by coating the outer periphery of a conductor with the flame retardant composition.
