PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide apparatuses and methods for fixing toner on different types of media efficiently. SOLUTION: The fixing device 500 for fixing the toner on the medium includes a pressure roll 530, a fixing belt 520, and a nip 505 formed by allowing the fixing belt 520 to come in contact with the pressure roll 530. The nip 505 includes an inlet end where the medium enters the nip 505, an outlet end where the medium exits the nip 505, and a nip width defined between the inlet end and the outlet end. The fixing device 500 further includes a mechanism 570 for moving the pressure roll 530 toward or away from the fixing belt 520 to adjust the nip width, and a stripping member 540 for stripping the medium from the fixing belt 520 after the medium exits from the outlet end of the nip 505.
