PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sludge interface detector detecting a sludge interface and a mixed phase composed by mixing a sludge phase and a water phase. SOLUTION: The sludge interface detector 10 for detecting the interface between a sludge phase and a water phase formed in a sedimentation tank 20, by performing measurements at a plurality of positions different in a depth direction by using at least one pair of an ultrasonic transmitting section 1A and an ultrasonic receiving section 1B facing mutually in a horizontal direction, includes a mechanism for changing the interval between these transmitting and receiving sections 1A and 1B. It is desirable for this mechanism to have a rail (rails) 2 for arranging the transmitting and receiving sections 1A and 1B, and a driving device 3 for moving either the transmitting section 1A or the receiving section 1B back and forth.
