<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a remarkable increase in emission such as smoke and unburnt fuel produced by incomplete combustion caused by a decrease in fuel injection speed in association with the closing of an inner needle 22, in a fuel injection valve 16 including a variable injection hole nozzle. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When engine speed and the total injection quantity from the fuel injection valve 16 fall within a predetermined range, it is determined whether or not fuel injection completion timing from a second nozzle port group 42 is on a delay angle side relative to the valve closing operation start timing of an outer needle 20. When it is determined that the fuel injection completion timing is on the delay angle side, the fuel injection completion timing from the second nozzle port group 42 is advanced to the valve closing operation start timing of the outer needle 20.
