<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid discharge apparatus which can suppress lowering of a discharge characteristic consequent to a displacement reduction of a piezoelectric element. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The printer, including a recording head that generates a pressure variation in a liquid in a pressure generation chamber by driving the piezoelectric element 6 and discharges the liquid from a nozzle by the pressure variation, enables the switching of a first mode in which the liquid is discharged from the nozzle by applying an electric field in a polarization direction of a piezoelectric layer 15 to the piezoelectric element, thereby driving the piezoelectric element and a second mode in which the liquid is discharged from the nozzle by applying an electric field in a reverse direction to the polarization direction of the piezoelectric body to the piezoelectric element, thereby driving the piezoelectric element.
