PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of obtaining an excellent image by performing an optimum correction, even when a recording medium detecting sensor is contaminated with toner and paper powder, thereby discriminating various kinds of recording mediums and applying proper fixation conditions, transfer conditions and conveyance conditions, on the basis of the discriminated result. SOLUTION: Two results obtained by irradiating a correction plate with light at a different timing from a light emitting means 1 and a light emitting means 2 being two different light emitting means and performing measurement are compared with each other, so that a sensor characteristic change from an initial state caused by a change with time can be discriminated in detail. The sensor characteristic change is detected in detail to perform the optimum correction according to the generation status of the characteristic change. Therefore, such a problem can be prevented that sensor detection performance is reduced while a user uses the image forming apparatus and control for changing development conditions, transfer conditions, fixation processing conditions or image processing is not properly performed.
