PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lens position detector for accurately detecting the absolute position of a lens with a compact configuration and achieving a large detection range corresponding to a relatively large moving amount, and a lens apparatus employing the lens position detector. SOLUTION: One of a first sheet coil (202) disposed in a lens frame (142) for holding the lens (116) or a movable section interlocking with the movement of the lens frame and a second sheet coil (172) disposed in a fixed section facing the first sheet coil (202) is used as an excitation coil, and the other is used as a detection coil. The first sheet coil (202) moves while keeping facing distance from the second sheet coil (172) following the movement of the lens frame (142), thereby detecting the position of the lens (116) based on an electric signal output from the detection coil according to the movement position.
