<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system for detecting an obstacle of high reliability capable of always safely moving each mobile unit by avoiding inconvenience that transmission and reception periods of an obstacle sensor in each mobile unit are overlapped, and a method for controlling the system. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The first and the second units for detecting an obstacle have the obstacle sensor for detecting distance to an obstacle by transmitting and receiving a signal. The first unit for detecting an obstacle transmits a synchronization signal in accordance with the transmission of the obstacle sensor. The second unit for detecting an obstacle receives the transmitted synchronization signal, and performs transmission and reception, based on the synchronization signal, at different timing from that of the obstacle sensor of the first unit for detecting an obstacle.
