<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high density recording medium which can perform high precision tracking without reducing its data recording capacity in a recording and reproducing apparatus. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium 4 has non-magnetic guides 1 formed between tracks having the magnetic recording areas 2 for recording information and the non-magnetic recording areas 3 not recording information, in order to magnetically separate the tracks. The non-magnetic recording areas 3 are formed continuous to the non-magnetic guides 1. Further, this magnetic recording medium 4 has at least one set of a first area where at least a portion of the non-magnetic recording areas 3 of: the first and second tracks Tr1, Tr2 and a portion of the magnetic recording areas 2 of the third track Tr3 are equally positioned in the track direction; and a second area where at least a portion of the non-magnetic recording areas 3 of the first and third tracks Tr1, Tr3 and a portion of the magnetic recording areas 2 of the second track Tr2 are equally positioned in the track direction.
