PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for button front/back determination, which is capable of determining the front and back sides of various kinds of buttons. SOLUTION: In the button front/back determination method, by irradiating the button B with incident light La and oblique light Lb of colors different from each other and imaging the button B, detection image data to which hue information of different hues according to the recessed and projecting shape of a button surface is added in addition to image information on the basis of patterns formed on the button are obtained, and the detection image data are processed to determine the front and back sides of the button B. The button front/back determination device 1 includes: an imaging means 2 including a camera 4 and a lighting device 5 for radiating the incident light la and oblique light Lb of the colors different from each other; and a control means 3 for obtaining the detection image data to which the hue information is added in addition to the image information by irradiating the button B with the incident light La and oblique light Lb of the colors different from each other and imaging the button B, processing the detected image data, and determining the front/back of the button B.
