<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plasma display that generates stable writing discharge. <P>SOLUTION: The plasma display includes an APL detecting circuit 49 and a partial lighting rate detecting circuit 47. A scanning electrode drive circuit 43 selectively carries out a one-phase drive for generating an initialization waveform only in an initialization period and a two-phase drive for generating an initialization waveform in a writing period as well. In the writing period, random scanning is carried out such that each area is scanned in such order that an area with a higher partial lighting rate has a shorter elapsing time from the initializing operation to the writing operation. If a determination is made in an APL detecting circuit 49 that an average luminance level is equal to or greater than a threshold, two-phase drive is carried out in one or more sub-fields that include a sub-field having the greatest luminance weight, also, random scanning is carried out. If a determination is made that the average luminance level is less than the threshold, the two-phase drive is altered to the one-phase drive in at least the sub-field that includes the greatest luminance weight among the one or more sub-fields. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT |
