PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element with which high reliability is ensured. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display element, a liquid crystal layer 40 is sealed between a TFT substrate 20 and a CF substrate 30. The liquid crystal layer 40 includes: liquid crystal molecules 41A held with an alignment control section 22B of an alignment layer 22 covering the TFT substrate 20; liquid crystal molecules 41B held with an alignment control section 32B of an alignment layer 32 covering the CF substrate 30; and liquid crystal molecules 41C positioned in the intermediate region in the thickness direction of the liquid crystal layer 40. The alignment layers 22, 23 contain a polymer compound having a functional group with radical reactivity bonded thereto, such as a polyimide with an acrylic group introduced thereinto. When a radical is generated in the liquid crystal layer 40, the functional group with radical reactivity functions so as to remove the radical. COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT
