<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backing metal which is easily fittable, and has an advantage that the gap between a column round-shaped part and the round-shaped part of the backing metal as the cause of a welding defect can be adjusted so as to be small, and in which the falling of molten metal is hard to be generated in the vicinity of the round-shaped part of the backing metal upon normal welding. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the backing metal 1, each cut 3 passing through from the outside face 5 of a round-shaped part 2 with a rectangular frame shape to the inside face 6 and formed in a parallel state to the longitudinal direction of the rectangular frame shape, and each cut 4 cutting either side face 8 of the backing metal 1 with a rectangular frame shape crossed with the crossing direction of each cut 3 passing through from the outside face 5 of the R-shaped part 2 with a rectangular frame shape to the inside face 6 and formed in a parallel state to the longitudinal direction of the rectangular frame shape so as to form a slit are formed. The backing metal 1 is stored in a column 9, and in which, when each fastening section 2A and each fastening section 2B separately formed by each cut 4 are struck by a hammer or the like along the column round-shaped part 10, the fastening part 2A and the fastening part 2B are deformed, and the gap between the round-shaped part 2 of the backing metal 1 and the column round-shaped part 10 is made narrow to a proper width.
