<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide technologies of producing a characteristic map for recognizing a position of a mobile robot and of extracting peripheral characteristic information. <P>SOLUTION: Characteristic information including a reflection function is extracted from the information acquired using a 3D distance sensor emitting light, based on which, a characteristic map is produced.
