PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a medium processing device having a control unit for detecting state changes and a control unit for controlling execution of processing according to the state changes, which are separated from each other, and to provide a control method therefor. SOLUTION: There is provided the method for controlling the medium processing device, which includes: a media drive 41 for writing data into a medium, a label printer 11 for performing printing on the label surface of the medium, medium stackers 21 and 22 for storing media; a medium conveying mechanism 31 conveying the media to the media drive 41, the label printer 11, and medium stackers 21 and 22; an automatic loader control unit 102 for controlling the media drive 41 and the medium conveying mechanism 31; and a main control unit 101 for transmitting a control command to the automatic loader control unit. The method includes the steps of: causing the automatic loader control unit 102 to convert the state change of the medium processing device 1 to an automatic status back and to transmit it to the main control unit 101; and causing the main control unit 101 to perform determination for the received automatic status back, and to execute processing based on the determination result.
