In the processing of a nitric acid solution of mixed uranium-plutonium nuclear fuel in which the solution is contacted with an organic phase comprising tributyl phosphate in an inert diluent, plutonium and uranium being extracted into the organic phase, leaving fission products in the aqueous phase, plutonium and uranium are returned to aqueous solution by backwashing the organic phase with aqueous sulphuric acid of such concentration and in such volumes that the ratio of plutonium moles in the organic feed to the sulphuric acid moles in the aqueous feed is in the range 1 to 1. 5-2. 5. Nitric acid may be added to the resulting aqueous phase and the extraction process repeated. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 801,743.</p> |
