PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light beam scanner in which a synchronization detection sensor normally operates and the incident of returning light to a laser diode (LD) is prevented, and to provide an image forming apparatus. SOLUTION: The light beam scanner includes an LD unit 31; a rotating polygon mirror 34 which deflects a light beam emitted from the LD unit 31; scanning optical systems 35A, 35B which condense the light beam deflected by the rotating polygon mirror 34 onto an image carrier 4, to form an electrostatic latent image; and the synchronization detection sensor 37, which receives a portion of the light beam deflected by the rotating polygon mirror 34 and detects the writing start position in the main scanning direction on the image carrier 4; and accordingly, the synchronization detection sensor 37 has a mounting angle, with respect to the angle of the light beam which is incident on the synchronization detection sensor, respectively in the main scanning direction and in the subscanning direction.
