PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for selectively producing carboxymethylcellulose with extremely high reaction efficiency of monohaloacetic acid or its salt. SOLUTION: This method for producing carboxymethylcellulose comprises reacting powdery cellulose of low crystallinity with monohaloacetic acid or its salt in the presence of a base and in the absence of an organic solvent.
