PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To variably display characters on key top surfaces and to enable key display and input detection to be performed while connecting a plurality of keys.

SOLUTION: A key input device includes: a circuit board formed in a matrix shape on which a plurality of first key contacts are formed; a switch sheet on which a plurality of second key contacts are formed in a matrix shape opposite to the first key contacts; electronic paper disposed on the switch sheet and displaying thereon characters or symbols on key tops; a plurality of key guides disposed between the first key contacts and the second key contacts; a key display section for displaying on the electronic paper characters or symbols generated by a key display generation section for generating characters or symbols of keys; a first detection section for detecting a signal of a corresponding key from a positional relationship between the first contact and the second contact by key pressing performed by a user; and a determination section for determining key input using signals from the key display section and the first detection section.
