PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chain tensioner having an oil supply passage formed inside a flange to be fixed on the outer surface of an engine cover, preventing the leakage of operating oil due to wrong operation. SOLUTION: This chain tensioner 1 includes a cylinder 9 inserted into a tensioner fitting hole 12 of the engine cover 11 and having the flange 13, formed on the cylinder 9, fixed to the outer surface of the engine cover 11. A plunger 10 is slidably inserted into the cylinder 9. An oil supply passage 24 is provided through which operating oil is guided into the pressure chamber 23 defined by the cylinder 9 and the plunger 10. A check valve 25 for preventing the reverse flow of the operating oil is provided in an outlet of the oil supply passage 24. The oil supply passage 24 includes a first hole 26 and a second hole 27, and the opening of the second hole 27 on the periphery of the flange 13 is closed with a male screw 29, and the male screw 29 is fixed by an adhesive 33.
