摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve a polarization state of high ellipticity in a laminated quarter wave plate in which a first wave plate and a second wave plate made of an optically uniaxial crystalline material are arranged so that respective optical axes may across each other at 90&deg;. <P>SOLUTION: In the laminated quarter wave plate 1, phase difference of the first wave plate 2 is made to satisfy &Gamma;<SB>1</SB>=360&deg;+&gamma;+n&times;360&deg;, (provided that, -90&deg;&le;&gamma;&le;+90&deg;and n is a nonnegative integer) and a phase difference of the second wave plate 3 is made to satisfy &Gamma;<SB>2</SB>=&Gamma;<SB>1</SB>-90&deg; or to be 270&deg;.
