PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a more compact digital camera and optical apparatus performing high-precision AF at high speed, as an apparatus which performs hill-climbing AF by driving an image sensor in order to achieve miniaturization and high speed and high precision of AF of the optical apparatus. SOLUTION: The digital camera includes: a photographic lens 20 having a focus lens 21 and a lens drive 22; and a camera body 30 having a controller 31, the image sensor 32, and an image sensor drive 33. The controller 31 calculates degree of focusing of a subject image imaged by the image sensor 32 as a focus evaluated value. Furthermore, the controller 31 adjusts a focus by controlling movement of the focus lens 21 and movement of the image sensor 32 based on the focus evaluated value. The image sensor drive 33 decides an initial position of the image sensor 32 based on the focus evaluated value obtained when driving the image sensor 32 in an optical axis direction.
