<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the computational quantity when computing a rectangle which circumscribes or approaches a processing object graphic. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This image processing device includes: a storage part in which an image to be processed is stored; a tangent deriving part which extracts borderlines as polylines expressed as a set of border points from an image read from the storage part and derives a tangent of the extracted borderlines; a projection part which projects the tangent to an axis orthogonal to the derived tangent and determines the coordinates of the intersection where the tangent crosses the axis; and a rectangle calculation part which extracts the intersection of the maximum and minimum of the values of the coordinates of the intersection determined from the projection part for each direction of the axis and determines a rectangle formed by a set of a pair of parallel tangents running on two intersection of the maximum and minimum extracted for the first axis and another pair of tangents running on two intersections of the maximum and minimum extracted for the second axis orthogonal to the first axis.
