<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for detecting a drop for a vehicle that facilitates avoidance even if an occupant of a following vehicle does not grasp that the drop has fallen from a preceding vehicle. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The apparatus includes an imaging means 11 for repeatedly imaging the front; a traveling status detection means 14 for detecting a traveling status; a preceding vehicle identification means 15 for identifying the preceding vehicle; an image data storage means 13 for detecting a horizontal line by image-processing the image data and storing pieces of image data, where the horizontal lines have been detected, in time sequence; a digitization means 15 for calculating a velocity of the object falling downward on the basis of a distance between a horizontal line (A) included in a piece of image data and a horizontal line (B) included in a piece of data, which has been imaged after the previous piece of image data and located below the horizontal line (A) and an imaging interval between the two pieces of image data, responsive to a trigger, which is the piece of image data where an object traverses the horizontal line, and a digitizing a probability that the object is a drop falling freely; and a warning means 16 for warning a driver when the digitized probability is larger than a threshold.
