PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection optical system capable of suppressing unexpected distortion caused on a projection image, and to provide a projection image display device. SOLUTION: The projection optical system 100 includes a dioptric system 10, a catoptric system 20 having a reflecting mirror 21 reflecting light emitted from the dioptric system 10, and a housing 30 holding the dioptric system 10 and the catoptric system 20. The housing 30 has a supporting part 321A and a supporting part 321B supporting the reflecting mirror 21 along a side part 21B and a side part 21D out of a plurality of side parts 21A to 21D provided on the reflecting mirror 21.
