<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make liquid refrigerant surely rise from a lower part in forming counterflows of a refrigerant in a plurality of refrigerant paths in flat tubes disposed with the longitudinal direction set vertical. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This heat exchanger 1 includes two header pipes 2, 3 disposed in parallel with a space, and the plurality of flat tubes 4 disposed between the header pipes 2, 3 with their longitudinal direction set vertical. The flat tubes 4 have the plurality of refrigerant paths 5 inside, and the refrigerant flow running from one end to the other end of the flat tubes 4, and returning to one end, is formed by one reciprocation or more while weaving zigzag in the refrigerant paths 5. When the heat exchanger 1 is used as a condenser, the refrigerant flow starts from descending flow. The refrigerant path in which the ascending flow passes, includes a cross-sectional area set smaller than that of the refrigerant path in which the descending flow passes.
