The method involves acquiring a parameter for controlling an internal combustion engine relating to solicited torque and regime. Adjustments of a functioning point of the engine are determined according to the controlling parameter. The internal combustion engine on the functioning point is controlled. An emission parameter is acquired related to mass flow of nitrogen oxide emitted by the internal combustion engine. The adjustments of the functioning point are determined according to the emission parameter. An independent claim is also included for a compression ignition internal combustion engine comprising a motor unit.
