PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a linear actuator generating a thrust force even if disconnection occurs in a part of coils. SOLUTION: The linear actuator includes: an outer tube 2; a rod 3 freely movably inserted into the outer tube 2; a field magnet 4 provided with a plurality permanent magnets 5 and held on either the outer tube 2 or the rod 3; and a plurality of coils C1, C2, C3 and C4 provided with a plurality phases of coils 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 opposing the field magnet 4 and held so as to be arranged in an axial direction on the other of the outer tube 2 and the rod 3. The linear actuator generates a thrust force for relatively displacing the outer tube 2 or the rod 3 in the axial direction. In the linear actuator, the plurality of coils C1, C2, C3 and C4 are divided into at least two or more groups, power supply to the coils 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 which the coils C1, C2, C3 and C4 belong to, respectively.
