<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress erasure of an adjacent track, while holding a high recording density. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A magnetic recording medium for a magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus is a bit-patterned medium, of a double-layer structure in which a recording layer provided on a predetermined substrate, such as, a glass substrate to record information thereon includes a soft magnetic layer, disposed on a hard magnetic layer and having a narrower width than the hard magnetic layer. The soft magnetic layer is disposed, deviated in the direction of increasing the distance from the protrusion of a leading edge of a head, when a skew angle is formed.
