<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for detecting the direction of movement which enables accurate detection of a position irrespective of the direction of movement, in detection of the position of movement and the direction of movement of a magnetic moving object. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The device includes: a sensor element group which has one or more sensor elements 21a, 21b and 22 outputting detection signals, opposing to a moving object 4 and accompanying the movement of the moving object 4; signal processing means 303 and 304 which change output signals of the sensor element group into rectangular waves; a movement direction detecting means 310 which outputs a signal corresponding to the direction of movement of the moving object 4, based on the detection signals of the sensor element group; output processing means 307 and 308 which output signals enabling discrimination of the direction of movement of the moving object 4, according to the output signals of the signal processing means and the output signals of the movement direction detecting means; and an output determining means 401 which determines output values of the output processing means. The movement direction detecting means 310 is made to have a delay function which puts out the output signal at a time instance delayed by a prescribed time from the time instance when the direction of movement of the moving object 4 is changed over.
