To stabilize a motor vehicle during tipping of its body 28 locking devices are provided whereby main and auxiliary leaf springs 20, 27 connecting the chassis of the vehicle with each end of an axle 15 may be held in a compressed state. Each locking device comprises a crossmember 7 which is secured to a rod 8 pivoted on the chassis and is urged by a servo-cylinder 2 into engagement with two parallel guide elements 11 braced by rods 16 and secured to the clamp coupling the springs 20, 27 with the axle 15, The servo-cylinders 2 are pivotally attached to the chassis and are connected through ducts 30 and a pressure regulating valve to an oil pump supplying a jack 25 which tips the body 28. When the body is returned to the driving position the cross members 7 are disengaged from the guide elements 11 to free the springs by actuating arms 12 which are rigidly secured to the rods 8 and carry bladewheels 13 for engagement with wear plates 34 beneath the body 28.
