<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problems wherein, in an internal combustion engine using a plasma atmosphere when performing ignition, it is considered that the amount of plasma follows a change in a load by adjusting a plasma atmosphere generating condition, however in the internal combustion engine using a microwave in order to generate the plasma, output of magnetron does not follow a rate of change in the transient operating condition of the internal combustion engine, output of the microwave corresponding to torque required for the transient operating condition is not obtained, and an intended transient operating condition is not achieved. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This method for controlling operation of a spark-ignition internal combustion engine controls the output of the electromagnetic wave based on the operating condition of the spark-ignition internal combustion engine igniting an air-fuel mixture by reacting the plasma generated in a combustion chamber by the electromagnetic wave with spark discharge by an ignition plug. The transient operating condition of the engine is detected.
