<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flat nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery excellent in heavy load discharging characteristics. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In this flat nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery, a metal negative electrode case serving as a negative terminal is fitted to a metal positive electrode case through an insulating gasket, the positive electrode case or the negative electrode case has a sealing structure caulked by a caulking process, and in the inside of the structure, a power generating element containing an electrode group in which a positive electrode plate and a negative electrode plate are multilayered through a separator and disposed face to face, and a nonaqueous electrolyte are enclosed. The positive electrode plate and the negative electrode plate have active substance containing layers formed on one side or both sides of a component having conductivity, and the number of facing sides of the active substance containing layer of the positive electrode plate and the active substance containing layer of the negative electrode plate in the electrode group are at least 5, and a sum of areas each defined by a pair of the facing sides is larger than the opening area of the insulating gasket.
