<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer that can precisely detect movement information of a medium from an image printed by itself on the medium without forming a redundant test pattern. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The printer includes a printing section that performs printing of an image in accordance with a print image signal while transporting a medium and a medium sensor that obtains image data by capturing a part of the image printed on the medium. The printer detects movement information of the medium in such a manner that a plurality of pieces of image data obtained at different timings are compared with each other by a pattern matching process. Adequate predetermined reading areas (23a, 23b, 23c, etc.) are set in accordance with the print image signal by each band, and then the movement information of the medium is detected by using the image in the region as a template pattern.
