The method involves using a coherent source for emission of electromagnetic radiation on an object i.e. commodity, where the object has an identifier with a code zone (1-1) containing an optical code and with a dispersion zone (1-2) containing multiple dispersion centers. The dispersion zone is irradiated with the electromagnetic radiation for identification and/or authentication purposes, where the electromagnetic radiation reflected by the code zone is used for identifying the object and the electromagnetic radiation reflected by the dispersion zone is used for authenticating the object. An independent claim is also included for a device for identifying and/or authenticating an object, comprising a coherent source.
