The hybrid steering system has a hydraulic device for producing a hydraulic power steering support, and an electrical device for producing an electric motor power steering support. A controller is provided for operating the hydraulic device and the electrical device, where the controller activates the hydraulic device, if the determined volume flow rate is larger than a pre-determined threshold value. An independent claim is included for a method for operating a hybrid steering system for a motor vehicle.
