A chair backrest, wherein a frame-like back frame (22) is covered and upholstered with a bag-like upholstering material (26) having a lower end open, the back frame (22) being formed by connecting a vertically extending left and right pair of side frames (18, 18) together at the upper and lower ends of the pair by an upper frame (19) and a lower frame (20) which extend in the left and right direction. An intermediate portion in the left-right direction of each of the upper and lower frames is connected to each other by a vertically extending intermediate frame (21) located behind both the side frames, and this causes an intermediate portion of the rear surface of the upholstering material to project rearward. When a person sitting on the chair leans against the backrest, reaction force of the upholstering material does not extremely vary during the leaning action and the upholstering material of the backrest is recessed rearward a sufficient amount in response to a load. This provides the user with comfortable sitting sensation.
