<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic tape which excels in initial SNR, and which can maintain a high SNR after storage, and which has superior storage stability. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The magnetic tape contains a non-magnetic support; a ferromagnetic layer which has a thickness of between 20 and 150 nm and contains a granular ferromagnetic powder having an axial ratio between 1.0 and 2.5; a binder, and which has a magnetization easy axis in a substantially vertical direction on one side of the non-magnetic support; and a soft magnetic layer which contains an Fe-Co-based soft magnetic powder, having saturation magnetization of 70 to 220 Am<SP>2</SP>/kg and a binder on the other side of the non-magnetic support.
