LARGE BLOCK ALLOCATION FOR DISK-BASED FILE SYSTEM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system for allocating block sizes in a computer file system. SOLUTION: A maximum input/output bandwidth requirement is determined for an application accessing a disk drive by using a file system. Also a maximum seek period for the disk drive to seek a first block to a second block on the disk and a minimum transfer speed of the disk drive are determined. This information is used to calculate a block size so that file fragmentation on the disk is reduced below a threshold needed by the application for providing minimum disk I/O throughput.
