The coupling has a display including a LED, and two plug-connector elements (1, 2) with respective primary and secondary coils (10, 20), where one of the elements (1) supplies a carrier signal to the other element (2) and transmits data to the latter connector element (2) by modulation of the signal. The elements are moved into a tactile mode between two defined axial positions of the elements. An electrical switch (30) detects the arrangement of the coupling in the tactile mode based on different induced voltages or temporal characteristics of the voltages, and transmits information. An independent claim is also included for a method of operating an inductive coupling for inductive transmission of energy and data.
