The domestic appliance, i.e. a cooker with heating elements (10a-10d) at the hob, has a control unit (12) and a user interface (14) with controls (16,18) to set a switch-off time for one or more heating elements to be switched off automatically after the set time span. The control has a maximum cooking time limit, which can be varied by at least one external factor e.g. signals from temperature sensors (20a-20d). The control has a clear text display (16).
