<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the need of knowing beforehand which is the electronic controller capable of executing the processing when making either electronic controller communicating with each other perform the processing of a certain fault diagnosis. <P>SOLUTION: When an ECU 10 (selected ECU) to which forcible drive is instructed from a scan tool 99 cannot execute processing by itself, whether or not the processing can be executed is inquired to the other ECU (non-selected ECU) (inquiry processing). When the inquired non-selected ECU determines that the processing can be executed by itself, it informs the selected ECU of an affirmative report. Then, the selected ECU makes the non-selected ECU which has made the report execute the forcible drive. Then, the non-selected ECU which has executed the forcible drive reports the result to the selected ECU.
