<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination system capable of providing illumination suitable for action by sensing the action of an operator on the system side, without instructing action from the operator itself. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The illumination system includes a sensor 1 for sensing the state of hands of an operator on operation surface, a calculation processing unit 2 which estimates the contents of an operation by an operator based on an output from the sensor, a lighting control unit 3 for controlling lighting of a luminaire 4 based on the output from the calculation processing unit 2, and the luminaire for emitting light to the operation surface under lighting control by the lighting control unit.
