<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cam angle sensor improving detection accuracy. Ž<P>SOLUTION: Cam torque acting on an intake camshaft 4 becomes approximately zero at a cam angle in which a high lift cam 71 lifts an intake valve 2 with a maximum lift, and rotational variation of the intake camshaft 4 (that is, a signal rotor 62) hardly occurs even if phase vibration along with feeding/discharging of working fluid is generated in the operation of an intake-side VTC actuator 20. At a cam angle in which a valve lift of a first cylinder in the process of opening is approximately the same as a valve lift of a second cylinder in the process of opening, leftward rotational torque acts on a first cylinder side cam, and on the other hand, rightward rotational torque acts on a second cylinder side cam. However, since their absolute values are equal to cancel out the rotational torque of them to make cam torque be approximately zero, and the rotational variation of the signal rotor 62 hardly occurs even if the phase vibration along with the feeding/discharging of the working fluid is generated in the operation of the intake-side VTC actuator 20.
