<p>The method involves inscribing identifiers (10B, 10C) other than postal identifiers on a mail item (10) by ink jet printing or manual writing using an ink e.g. heat-sensitive ink, before introducing the mail item into a franking machine (14). The mail item is heated above a predetermined temperature, and the inscribed identifiers are erased after printing a postal impression (10A) on the mail item by the machine. The identifiers are chosen from one-dimensional barcodes, two-dimensional barcodes, manual inscriptions and alphanumeric inscriptions, and read by an optical reading module (16). An independent claim is also included for a mail item receiving module comprising a temperature sensor.</p> |
