A speculum device for dilating a body cavity or orifice, the speculum device comprising a plurality of separator elements configured for relative movement between a relatively contracted configuration and a relatively expanded configuration and an actuator arrangement arranged to apply an opening force to urge reconfiguration of the speculum device to the expanded configuration against the resistance force applied by the body cavity or orifice, the device including a force limitation means arranged to inhibit the opening force from exceeding a threshold level.
