The method involves determining a section-nominal size, and multiplying a reference nominal size (110) with a compensation factor (120). A work piece positioning element is processed in a position, and a work piece is positioned by the work piece positioning element in a cutting edge of a circular saw blade. The work piece position is released by a user interface (130). The work piece positioning element is manually displayed on the user interface and manually positioned during implementation of cuts on the work piece whose length corresponds to the average nominal size. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a sliding circular saw with a controlling unit (2) a computer program product for executing a method for controlling a sliding circular saw.
