The device (1) has a fluid compartment (2) filled with a fluid in which a load (6) floats. A collecting tank (12) is provided at a lower part of the fluid compartment, and a barrel (14) is provided at a top part of the fluid compartment, where the fluid in the compartment is pumped to individually separated spaces (8) by control of individual valves (10a, 10b), and potential energy generated by fluid movement is transferred to generators (7a, 7b). The compartment is connected to the individually separated spaces through gently sloping channels (9a, 9b). An independent claim is also included for a method for generating energy.
