<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surroundings monitoring apparatus capable of measuring a position of another vehicle with high accuracy by an easy method. <P>SOLUTION: The surroundings monitoring apparatus includes a detection means and a measurement means. The detection means sets a prescribed area on a road surface in one's own vehicle travel direction as a detection area, and detects a light projection pattern formed in the detection area by associating positional relationship between a projection position formed with the light projection pattern and the position of the other vehicle to size of the light projection pattern, by the other vehicle.
