<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a color image forming apparatus capable of obtaining a color image of high quality reduced in a writing-start positional shift between respective scanning optical devices. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes a plurality of scanning optical devices having an incident optical means for light-guiding a light beam emitted from a light source means into a deflecting means, an image forming optical system for image-forming the light beam that is deflection-scanned by the deflecting means, on a face to be scanned, and a synchronization-detecting optical system for regulating image start timing on the face to be scanned, using part of the light beam deflection-scanned by the deflecting means, and a ratio of a focal distance of the image forming optical system to a focal distance of the synchronization-detecting optical system is set properly within a main scanning cross section in each of the scanning optical devices for acquiring a black image and images of colors other than the black image.
